2007-06-18: Designing for Dogs
by Meguey
I don't know if it's too soon to say this, but I'm working on some really beautiful patchwork pieces for the dust-covers of the impending hard-cover edition of DitV. This is cool and fun, and combines three things I love: quilting, role-playing games, and doing neat creative stuff with Vincent.
So far there are 4 covers, each of which I designed with a different Dog's character in mind, as if I was actually a member of their family, designing their coat. There are a few more to come. The process of thinking about a Dog-to-be and what I know of them and what I, as their community support and part of making their coat, would want for them has informed my choice of color and design throughout the project. I'm deeply aware of the talismanic purpose of quilts and sewn work for loved ones traveling into danger, I'm mindful of what colors and prints would be available in the 'mythic West' of the Dog's world, and I'm enjoying the whole thing immensely.
Edit: Now with pictures!

Yes, they will be at GenCon. I want to put up pictures, but I guess I should check with Vincent first, in case he wants it to be a surprise.

Wow! That sounds awesome. I can't wait to see them!

I too can't wait to see what you come up with.
I think it is really neat how Vincent only trusts his Dogs covers to family.

A real labour of love, that sounds incredible. Will they be on show at Gen Con?

I love how you are making them from the point of view of a dog's family member. Can't wait to see!

Are there going to be 4 covers available?
If so, I may just have to buy them all.
Maybe not, but I will be sorely tempted.

That's so cool! I've only heard snippets of the whole project (I think our conversations get interrupted by babies and the like!). So now I can say Aha! That's so very awesome!

Robby - There will be at least four covers, possibly six, and I've got to stop designing more! Since it's just a small area, 6"x9", it's so easy to make 'just one more'. Making these is to making a bed quilt as making a sandwich is to making Thanksgiving dinner for 12.

What a great idea!

Oh my goodness. I got to see them, and if y'all weren't drooling over this already, you should be.
But how to choose from among them!?! I think my fave is the green, Meg. But the fandangly black from the character you played long ago is something else.

Hardcover Dogs? *faint*
Meguey-created patchwork dustcovers? *faint*

Here're rough bits of the two Emily mentioned. They're all going to have names, too.

That black, especially, is gorgeous.

Thanks!
There's also a denim-y one with red and light blue; a brown and gold one; a wine and cream one with tiny bunches of grapes, and a black/fuschia/pale blue one. There will probably be a rust/turquious one and a white/tan one. Then I really have to stop :)

They're wonderful. How long does each one take you?
2007-07-23 03:37:14 Meguey
The time invested varies wildly. The green one was very quick, the black one was ridiculously long. At least an hour, and up to three-four hours.
We've now done all the lay-out for three covers, and they look pretty darn good.

I'm scooping you Meg, I hope you don't mind:

Blood-stains? Creepy...
Meg, these covers look fantastic! Great job!

Bloodstains, fade marks, burns - this one's called Conviction.
The green one has no distressing, and it's called Mercy.
